(2021-ongoing)
My work is influenced by the Akan concept of Sankofa which can be translated to "go back and retrieve it." As Black Americans much of our history is left to be rediscovered. Our existence itself is layered and complicated. Even if we do not seek our fractured past or our indigenous ties to Africa it cannot be ignored. Its a deep a layered network within our DNA. My work embodies this layered and complex past. It is a continual process of learning, mapping, searching and superimposing. Similar to the network of systems like the technology which currently allows us to keep record of knowledge that was once lost or not accessible, my collages are a layered network of color and shape reflecting those systems used to link and engage the collective consciousness of the African diaspora. I also believe those systems exist within each Black American. We are are network of pasts we have not individually experienced. However, the more we learn the more we shape our futures and who we are as people.
